Silver Navigation (NNAS Award)

This course builds on the skills learned on the Bronze Award and develops them further. There is a strong emphasis on developing your ability to recognise and visualise map features on the ground. You will also spend time improving the accuracy of your use of the compass.

This course is ideal for anyone wanting to increase their confidence in navigation, especially in bad weather and away from major marked paths.

This course is Accredited by the National Navigation Award Scheme and meets their Silver standard qualification. Upon completion of the course you will receive a certificate and a fabric badge.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop strategies using Micro and Macro Navigation
  • Incorporate the use of ‘tick’ features to monitor progress and check route accuracy
  • Develop and extend the use of techniques such as ‘aiming off’, ‘attack points’ and ‘collecting features’, as aids to simplifying navigation
  • Use contours to accurately identify a range of features on the map and visualise them on the ground
  • Understand the factors that affect route choice
  • Accurately measure distances on the map and on the ground using ‘timings and pacing’
  • Learn how to relocate when lost and communicate your position to others
  • Take and follow compass bearings and be able to use these to identify linear features
  • Plan a safe walk using the above techniques

This course is 2 days long and all the maps and compasses required are supplied by First Mountains. Due to the terrain covered on the course walking boots with sufficient ankle support are required along with a water proof jacket and trousers.
